In the Bathroom

For our sound environment assignment, our group decided to create sounds that would feel as though the listener was in a public bathroom. Our aim for this was to put the person in a bathroom environment through the use of sounds. By entering a public bathroom at Glenn College, we recorded sounds through each of the group members’ iPhones. The first sound was supposed to be somebody urinating, which we did through the use to pouring tap water into a toilet.

Our second sound was the flushing of the toilet, aiming to put the listener in the environment and make them feel as though they have flushed the toilet.

By recording two mumbling voices, we also created the illusion that the listener is in a bathroom cubicle, and there is a couple of girls gossiping. Here, our aim was to make it difficult for the listener to hear what is being said, hopefully provoking the listener to want to hear what the girls are saying.

Our last sound in our environment was a tap running as the listener washes their hands. We faced a problem with this, as we attempted recording the sound with a bathroom sink, but it didn’t sound distinguishable enough. So, we used a stainless steel kitchen sink and were able to create a better sound. With this, we were aiming to conclude the narrative, as most people recognise this as the end of a trip to the bathroom.

In the end, we used Audacity to cut out any unnecessary sounds that were in the individual tracks. Then, we added them to a single Audacity file in order to get the timing exactly right in order to present it in class. The following track is all of the sounds together in one audio track.

Overall, our aim was to put the listener in the position of the person urinating and everything is happening around them. Through the use of our iPhones, we were able to record the sounds, and through using Audacity, we were able to edit the sounds to our liking.
